Michael Cassel is an internationally recognised producer and entertainment executive, with credits including major theatrical productions, concerts, televised and special events.
Michael formed his company, Michael Cassel Group, to produce and present prestige theatrical productions; to create and develop exciting new live entertainment experiences and to present marquee events and concert attractions.
Michael is the producer of the Broadway smash-hit, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, currently playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre to great acclaim. The show will tour to Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in 2018.
Michael will produce the first international tour of the world’s #1 musical, Disney’s The Lion King, premiering in Manila in March 2018. Celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary, the show will also tour to Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and South Africa, with other engagements to be announced.
Michael is producing the 10th anniversary tour of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which begins in Melbourne this January followed by seasons in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.
Michael is the Executive Producer of the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The record-breaking production will open in Melbourne, exclusively, in early 2019 at the Princess Theatre. The production is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.
Previously, Michael produced the much-celebrated Australian production of Kinky Boots, the Australian and Asian tour of Singin’ In the Rain and presented the sold-out tour of Lea Salonga in Concert in partnership with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Michael was Executive Producer of Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of Les Misérables, which enjoyed a triumphant nineteen-month tour of Australia where the production received the Helpmann Award for ‘Best Musical’ before touring Asia.
In addition to his theatrical interests, Michael’s company represents former Australian Prime Minister, The Hon. Julia Gillard AC, former Olympian and global sporting administrator, Lord Sebastian Coe CH, KBE and media personality, Sami Lukis.
Michael’s ten-year tenure with Disney Theatrical Group, the live entertainment division of The Walt Disney Company, saw him hold a series of senior management positions at the company in both the United States and Australia, most recently as Director, International based in New York City. In this role, Michael produced the company’s Broadway stage productions including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, AIDA, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid and High School Musical.
Michael also supported Disney on Ice and Disney Live! licensed to Feld Entertainment, in international markets. In addition, Michael oversaw the company’s second class and stock and amateur licensing initiatives with Music Theatre International. Highlights included launching new productions of The Lion King in Australia, China, South Africa, Taiwan and Singapore and, as Associate Producer, mounting new productions of Beauty and the Beast in South Africa, Brazil and Argentina and AIDA in Korea and Japan.
Michael commenced his professional career working with Australia’s foremost entertainment entrepreneur and celebrity manager, Harry M Miller.
Michael currently serves on the Executive Council of Live Performance Australia, the peak body for Australia’s live entertainment and performing arts industry.
Michael lives in Sydney with his wife Camille and their children Eveleigh and Vaughn.
