Michael Cassel is an internationally recognised producer and entertainment executive, with credits including major theatrical productions, concerts, televised and special events.

Michael formed his company, Michael Cassel Group, to produce and present prestige theatrical productions; to create and develop exciting new live entertainment experiences and to present marquee events and concert attractions.

The company exclusively represents Cameron Mackintosh and his productions in Australia. In this capacity, Michael was Executive Producer of the acclaimed new production Les Misérables which enjoyed a triumphant nineteen-month tour of Australia where the production received the Helpmann Award for ‘Best Musical’ before touring Asia.

Michael will produce the first international tour of the world’s #1 musical, Disney’s The Lion King, to premiere in Manila in March 2018 followed by engagements in Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and South Africa. The international tour which will launch in celebration of The Lion King’s 20th anniversary on stage.

Michael produced the Australian premiere of Kinky Boots at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne in October 2016. With music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is the winner of six Broadway Tony® Awards including ‘Best Musical’. Kinky Boots transferred to Sydney in April 2017.

Michael will produce the Broadway smash-hit, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which will premiere in Sydney in September at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. The true story of the legendary singer’s journey from schoolgirl to international superstar, the production features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil.

Michael is producing the 10th anniversary of everyone’s favourite Aussie musical, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The fabulously funny, fish out of water musical is based on the Oscar-winning film about Mitzi, Felicia and former Les Girl, Bernadette – who hop aboard a battered old bus named Priscilla bound for Alice Springs. The Australian tours begins in Melbourne this January with stops in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Previously, Michael co-produced the Australian and Asian tour of Singin’ In the Rain and presented the sold-out Australian tour of Lea Salonga in Concert which saw the Tony® and Olivier Award-winning star make her Sydney Opera House debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his theatrical interests, Michael’s company represents former Australian Prime Minister, The Hon. Julia Gillard AC, former Olympian and global sporting administrator, Lord Sebastian Coe CH, KBE and media personality, Sami Lukis.

Michael’s ten-year tenure with Disney Theatrical Group, the live entertainment division of The Walt Disney Company, saw him hold a series of senior management positions at the company in both the United States and Australia, most recently as Director, International based in New York City. In this role, Michael produced the company’s Broadway stage productions including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, AIDA, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid and High School Musical.

Michael also supported Disney on Ice and Disney Live! licensed to Feld Entertainment, in international markets. In addition, Michael oversaw the company’s second class and stock and amateur licensing initiatives with Music Theatre International. Highlights included launching new productions of The Lion King in Australia, China, South Africa, Taiwan and Singapore and, as Associate Producer, mounting new productions of Beauty and the Beast in South Africa, Brazil and Argentina and AIDA in Korea and Japan.

Michael commenced his professional career working with Australia’s foremost entertainment entrepreneur and celebrity manager, Harry M Miller.

Michael currently serves on the Executive Council of Live Performance Australia, the peak body for Australia’s live entertainment and performing arts industry.

Michael lives in Sydney with his wife Camille and their children Eveleigh and Vaughn.
